Low Cost 3D Scanning Turntable With Synchronized Laser Line Stepping Driven By Arduino

Arduino Nano-based portable 3D scanner using Sharp IR sensor and NEMA 17 stepper motors. Captures object geometry as x,y,z point cloud data stored on SD card, reconstructable into 3D models via MeshLab.

This project presents a low-cost, portable 3D scanning machine built using an Arduino Nano microcontroller. The system captures the surface geometry of real-world objects by rotating them on a turntable while a Sharp IR distance sensor measures depth at each angle. The collected x,y,z coordinate data is stored on a MicroSD card and can be reconstructed into a 3D model using MeshLab.

The entire build uses basic electronic and mechanical components, making it an accessible DIY alternative to expensive commercial 3D scanners.

The system was validated by scanning a rectangular box with the following measured dimensions:

Point cloud data was successfully captured across multiple Z-layers (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mm increments) and reconstructed into a 3D model.
